Subaru Posts Record Sales Year in 1998
        1998 Marks Sixth Year of Year-Over-Year Retail Sales Increases

    CHERRY HILL, N.J., Jan. 6 -- Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA)
today announced its year-end sales figures for 1998 marking the sixth
consecutive year of year-over-year retail sales increases.  Subaru recorded a
sales total of 147,833 units for year-end 1998 up 10.5 percent over year-end
1997 sales.
    December posted total sales of 14,638 units, a 7.8 percent increase over
December 1997.  December 1998 was the best December retail sales month since
1987 with 13,011 units.
    The Legacy model line led sales with 8,992 units posted.  The Outback set
an all-time sales record with 6,528 units posted.  Forester also celebrated an
all-time record month with 4,296 units posted, an increase of 42 percent over
the same period last year.
    Subaru of America, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy
Industries Ltd. of Japan.  Headquartered near Philadelphia, the company
markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a
network of nearly 600 franchised dealers across the United States.  All Legacy
models sold in the U.S., including the Outback and Sport Utility Sedan, are
produced at the company's American manufacturing plant, Subaru-Isuzu
Automotive, Inc., near Lafayette, Ind.
