American Honda Sales Top One Million for First Time Ever
TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 6 -- Total American Honda sales topped
one million vehicles for the first time ever in 1998 and shattered numerous
company records in the process, according to sales figures released today.
Total 1998 American Honda sales of 1,009,600 were up 7.4 percent from
1997, the previous record. Honda Division sales of 899,208 were up
8.0 percent, topping last year's mark. Acura Division sales of 110,392 were
up 2.1 percent.
Records set during 1998 include:
* total car sales of 860,471, up 3.7 percent from 1997 and topping the
previous record for total car sales of 854,879 dating back to 1990;
* total light truck sales of 149,129, up 34.3 percent from 1997, the
previous record;
* Civic sales of 334,562, up 6.0 percent from 1997, the previous record;
* CR-V sales of 100,582, up 50.7 percent from 1997;
* Acura TL sales of 31,883, up 37.7 percent from 1997;
* new monthly sales records set in nine of 12 months;
* total sales of vehicles made in North America, boosted by the start-up
of North American production for the Acura TL and Honda Odyssey, were
up 10.2 percent from the previous record set in 1996. North American
made vehicles accounted for more than 75 percent of all American Honda
vehicles sold in the U.S.
"The consumer thirst for light trucks was the big industry news for 1998
and the same was true at American Honda, with light truck sales up nearly 35
percent," said Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda
Motor, Co., Inc. "That trend is likely to continue in 1999 as the demand for
the CR-V and new Odyssey continues to outrun supply."
American Honda December sales of 83,936 also set a record for the month,
up 6.3 percent from the previous record set in December 1997. Odyssey sales
of 3,089 were up 166.6 percent in December and set a new record for the month.
The Honda CR-V and Acura 3.2TL also set December sales records.
