TransTechnology Unit Earns ISO-14001 Environmental Certification

LIBERTY CORNER, N.J.--Dec. 28, 1998-- TransTechnology Corporation announced that its Seeger Orbis GmbH & Co. OHG subsidiary in Konigstein, Germany has been awarded ISO 14001 by an independent German registration body. ISO14001 is a series of rigorous environmental audits and certifications that assure a company's policies and procedure meet the highest standards of environmental awareness and compliance. Seeger Orbis is the first unit of TransTechnology to achieve ISO 14001 certification. TransTechnology Corporation expects to have two additional operations ISO 14001 certified in early 1999, with several of its other operations achieving that certification over the next few years.
Michael J. Berthelot, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of TransTechnology, said "We are very pleased that our efforts to operate our business units with the highest levels of environmental awareness are recognized. TransTechnology is committed to manufacturing the highest quality parts and systems while at the same time maintaining, preserving, and enhancing the physical environment in which we, our employees, customers, suppliers and their families live. I am very proud that our Seeger-Orbis operation has led the way in achieving the ISO-14001 certification."
The ISO 14000 environmental standards are a series of voluntary standards and guideline reference documents developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Of the series, ISO 14001 is the foundation document that establishes requirements for the development, implementation, and maintenance of comprehensive and integrated environmental management systems.
Jeffrey Forgang, Director of Environmental Affairs for TransTechnology Corporation, said "ISO-14001 certifications are relatively rare, with only 5,446 business locations world-wide so certified. Seeger-Orbis is one of only 630 ISO-14001 certified sites in Germany. ISO-14001 is much more highly valued and pursued in Europe than in the United States, evidenced by the fact that less than 200 U.S. sites were ISO-14001 certified as of September, 1998. ISO-14001 certification is becoming increasingly important to doing business in Europe, especially with regards to the automotive industry. "
Berthelot went on to say "The achievement of this certification requires the hard work and dedication, on a daily and continuing basis, of each of our employees at Seeger-Orbis. Their personal commitment to improving the environment is what drives this certification process, and what will assure that the high standards of ISO-14001 are continued into the future."
Seeger Orbis employs 230, was established in 1917, and has been located at its current site since 1945. It is the world's largest manufacturer of retaining rings, a highly engineered product line of specialty fasteners used in transmissions, drive trains, and braking systems of automobiles, trucks, and off-road equipment as well as in computers, cameras, and industrial and consumer products.
TransTechnology Corporation is a multi-national manufacturer of specialty fasteners and aerospace products with over 1,800 employees at its twelve facilities in the U.S., England, Germany and Brazil.
