Diesel Progress Names Caterpillar Newsmaker of the Year

Caterpillar Named Diesel Progress 1998 Newsmaker of the Year
    BROOKFIELD, Wis., Dec. 28 -- Diesel Progress magazine has
named Caterpillar Inc. as its 1998 Newsmaker of the Year.
Caterpillar was cited for its wide ranging activities in 1998, including the
acquisition of Perkins Engines, the launch of its new compact construction
equipment line, the purchase of Kato Engineering, the development of the
HEUI-B and MEUI-B diesel fuel systems, the joint venture with Tamrock, the new
Caterpillar-Claas combine facility, and many other smaller deals.
    The Newsmaker of the Year Award, a Waterford crystal bowl, was presented
to Caterpillar chairman Donald V. Fites and Caterpillar senior officers at a
luncheon on December 17.
    The Diesel Progress Newsmaker of the Year Award was inaugurated in 1997 to
honor the company, person, product, technology or industry trend that made in
the most news in the heavy duty industrial engine and equipment markets during
the previous calendar year.  These markets include on-highway and off-highway
vehicles, stationary engine-powered installations such as power generation,
oil & gas, pumps, compressors, and marine applications.  The 1997 Newsmaker of
the Year was Dana Corp.
    Diesel Progress is a 63-year-old monthly trade magazine headquartered in
Brookfield, Wis.  Covering virtually anything powered by industrial diesel,
gasoline, natural gas, or gas turbine engines, Diesel Progress is one of six
