Sonic Automotive, Inc. Announces Stock Split

    CHARLOTTE, N.C., Dec. 16 -- Sonic Automotive, Inc.
announced today that the Board of Directors declared a two-for-one
stock split.  The record date for the stock split is January 4, 1999.  The
payment date for the stock split is January 25, 1999.
