Engelhard Awarded Distinction from Volkswagen

    ISELIN, N.J., Dec. 14 -- Engelhard Corp. was
recently presented with Volkswagen's prestigious "Formula Q" quality award for
its Nienburg, Germany, facility's excellent performance, product quality and
service.
    Engelhard was one of only 28 of Volkswagen's more than 9,000 suppliers to
receive the award.  Suppliers were subjected to a selection procedure
consisting of several stages, which involved all departments of the Volkswagen
marque.  More than 120,000 combinations of materials, groups and manufacturing
facilities were evaluated in line with pre-determined quality criteria.  One
mark against a supplier, its product or its service immediately disqualified
it from receiving the award.
    According to Francisco Javier Garcia Sanz, board member of Volkswagen
responsible for purchasing, the award is part of the company's vision of
becoming a zero-defect automaker.
    "Today we came closer to our objective because the winning criteria of the
Formula-Q Award demand not only a permanent maximum of quality, but also world
class," Garcia said.  "The Formula-Q Award is a very special award of the
brand VW.  Our suppliers have furnished a great engagement and a professional
quality management.  Therefore, they receive a well-deserved recognition."
    Engelhard is a major supplier of catalyst systems to Volkswagen.  It has
been supplying product to Volkswagen since 1994.
    "This recognition is consistent with our global commitment to quality and
customer satisfaction," said Edmund Stanczak, group vice president and general
manager at Engelhard.  "As a supplier to Volkswagen for only four years,

award."
