Uniroyal Technology Corporation Purchases Equity Position In Emcore Corporation

    SARASOTA, Fla., Dec. 9 -- In a filing today with the
Securities and Exchange Commission, Uniroyal Technology Corporation
reported that it has purchased for approximately $9 million or
$14 per share, convertible preferred stock of Emcore Corporation (EMKR), that
when converted would represent approximately 6.4% of the outstanding common
shares of Emcore.
    "With this purchase Uniroyal Technology Corporation continues to
strengthen its strategic alliance with Emcore," said Howard R. Curd, Chairman
and CEO of Uniroyal Technology Corporation.  Early this year Uniroyal
Technology Corporation announced the formation of Uniroyal Optoelectonics,
Inc., a joint venture with Emcore Corporation, to manufacture light emitting
diodes (LEDs).
    Uniroyal Optoelectronics' 70,000 sq. ft. facility in Tampa, Florida, is
expected to be completed in February 1999. The facility will manufacture and
ship epitaxial wafers, dies and packaged ready dies for LEDs in high
brightness saturated colors, including blue and green by mid-1999.
    Uniroyal Technology Corporation manufactures and sells proprietary plastic
products and specialty chemical and polymer products.  The Company has four
