TRW, Simula Secure New Side-Impact Business from European Automaker
    WASHINGTON, Mich., and PHOENIX, Dec. 7 -- TRW, Inc. and
Simula, Inc. announced that they have received business from a major European
automaker utilizing the Inflatable Tubular Structure (ITS(R)) for side-impact
protection.
    Slated for introduction in calendar year 2000, first-year production
volume is expected to be approximately 200,000 units for frontal driver and
passenger protection.  More specific information regarding the customer and
vehicle platform is not currently available, due to customer confidentiality
agreements.
    The new business results from an agreement TRW and Simula announced on
June 9, 1998 to integrate Simula's ITS into TRW's side impact protection
offerings to worldwide vehicle makers.  Simula already supplies BMW with the
ITS for a number of vehicles.
    Separately, TRW and Simula on November 10, 1998 announced the signing of
an exclusive agreement for TRW to develop and market Simula's patented
inflatable seat belt technology known as the Inflatable Tubular Torso
Restraint (ITTR(R)).
    TRW is the world's largest provider of occupant restraint
systems, including air bags, seat belts and steering wheel systems.  Based in
Cleveland, TRW provides advanced technology products and services for the
automotive and space and defense markets.  Sales for 1997 were about
$12 billion, including the company's acquisition of BDM International.  TRW's
automotive sales were more than $7 billion.
    Simula , based in Phoenix, is an acknowledged world leader in
transportation safety and energy absorption technology.  Its principal product
lines are high technology energy absorbing aircraft seating systems;
lightweight and efficient advanced composite structures; protective systems
including inflatable restraints, air bags and ballistic armor; and rail and
