7 December 1998

ESD Announces 1999 Global Climate Change Conference in Detroit
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Dec. 4 -- ESD The Engineering Society will
sponsor a conference "Global Climate Change: Implications for Industry," co-
sponsored by the University of Michigan on March 22, 1999 at Cobo Center in
Detroit, Mich. The purpose of the conference is to provide concise scientific
information concerning greenhouse gases, their linkages to Global Climate
Change, and the current initiatives by industry for reduction of these gas
releases. The conference will provide opportunities for stakeholders to learn
global perspectives and practical approaches which can lead to cost-effective
and environmentally sound action plans.
The University of Michigan has numerous faculty and facilities dedicated
to analyzing the factors involved in global climate change. Several of these
scientists have been serving as technical advisors to members of the U.S.
Department of State in their treaty negotiations at Kyoto and Buenos Aires.
Also, some of these scientists serve as counselors for major industries.
Three of these experts will share knowledge and insights about the science of
global climate change. Major Michigan industries have publicly announced
their intentions to work towards reduction in greenhouse gas releases.
Representatives will share their current objectives and plans.
The keynote luncheon speaker will be Mr. Daniel Reifsnyder, Director, U.S.
Department of State, Office of Global Change. The conference will join the
Economic Club of Detroit Luncheon. Mr. Reifsnyder will address the luncheon
guests and conferences concerning the social, economic, and political impacts
of the Global Warming International Treaty negotiations. This conference
offers "beginners" the best way to learn the basics and the "experts" an
opportunity to learn about the latest policy initiatives, projected trends,
and approaches to meeting future challenges.
Founded in 1895 as the Association of Graduate Engineers of the University
of Michigan, ESD has evolved into the largest multi-disciplinary engineering &
scientific society of its kind with members throughout the Great Lakes Region.
Major conferences include IBEC (International Body Engineering Conference);
Advanced Coating Technology; Advanced Composites Technology; Environmental and
Advanced Technology Vehicles Conference and Exposition; and Landfill Design.
The Society publishes proceedings of all its conferences. The Society also
publishes Technology Century(TM) magazine, the official publication of ESD,
and Technology Calendar newsletter. ESD sponsors public policy research,
technical internships and congressional fellowships. For more information
