Dupont Automotive Announces Key Management Appointment; Fields to Focus on Economic Growth Through Customer ValueTROY, Mich., Dec. 4 -- Walter L. Fields III has been named vice president - DuPont Automotive Engineering Materials with primary responsibility for global marketing and development of DuPont engineering plastics and other engineering materials to the automotive industry, according to Louis F. Savelli, president of DuPont Automotive. Fields succeeds J. Erik Fyrwald, who has been named vice president of DuPont Corporate Plans, and will relocate to Wilmington, Del. "Walter brings a number of skills that will enhance our customer focus, especially through his extensive knowledge of markets and the company's service capabilities," said Savelli. "He is a strong proponent of the belief that suppliers must find ways to create value for their customers if they are to grow profitably." In his 20-year career with DuPont, Fields has held a number of prominent product marketing and business management positions, most recently, global business director for DuPont Nomex(R) aramid products since 1995. Fields joined DuPont in 1978 as a design engineer for the DuPont Old Hickory, Tenn., fiber manufacturing site, and was subsequently responsible for the Dacron(R) polyester filament line. From 1989 to 1992, Fields served as marketing manager of Nomex(R) aramid electrical insulation. In 1992, he transferred to Japan as regional business director for DuPont Advanced Fibers Systems, establishing three joint-venture companies. He then became president of DuPont Teijin Advanced Papers in Japan and DuPont Teijin Advanced Papers Ltd. in Hong Kong, positions held until 1995. "I've had tremendous opportunities here at DuPont, not just in terms of business and marketing experience, but also in people development programs through diversity, team interaction and project management," Fields said. "Through that experience, I've come to understand that sustaining the economic health of a company and of the supply chain is not just a matter of making a better product. It also means working together with customers to manage supply chain opportunities in a way that we bring innovation to the marketplace." With world headquarters in Troy, Mich., DuPont Automotive offers more than 100 product lines to the global automotive industry, including plastics, advanced composites, finishes, fibers, fabricated products, refrigerants, specialty chemicals and lubricants. DuPont worldwide automotive sales were $4 billion in 1997.
