SDRC Announces Metaphase PDM Deployment at Seiko by JRI

CINCINNATI--Dec. 2, 1998--SDRC , a leading global provider of product development solutions and developer of I-DEAS(TM) and Metaphase(R) Enterprise(TM) software, announced today that Seiko Epson has fully deployed its product data management (PDM) system based on SDRC's Metaphase Enterprise software. Seiko Epson is using Metaphase to rebuild its system for managing parts used in the design and manufacture of printers, its major product, and point-of-sale-related products. Seiko Epson is also using Metaphase to address Year 2000 compliance within its product data systems.
Seiko Epson and its systems integrator, The JRI (Japan Research Institute) System Solution Limited, selected Metaphase Enterprise for its breadth of large-scale PDM functionality. Seiko Epson is using Metaphase to increase efficiency in product registration and design at its six overseas parts manufacturing facilities. Metaphase integrates product information including drawings and technical documents, which were previously managed by several different systems.
In the first phase of implementation, completed in September 1998, JRI replaced Seiko Epson's mainframe with a client server system for part tables and began operating Seiko Epson's document distribution system. In the future, this system will be linked with the production management, quality management and management information systems.
"The conversion of the BOM system from the mainframe to the new system was very smooth using Metaphase," said Kenji Akahane, manager of IS group, Information Planning Department, Seiko Epson.
"The Seiko Epson implementation is further confirmation of Metaphase's success in managing globally distributed data across the enterprise," said Bob Nierman, executive vice president and chief operating officer of SDRC. "Metaphase clearly offers the flexibility and scalability to seamlessly support global initiatives for faster time to market."
Seiko Epson Corporation started its operation in 1942 as a manufacturer of SEIKO watches. Since then, the company's operations have expanded to encompass the entire range of information-related equipment, including the development, manufacture, and sale of Epson printers, personal computers, electronic devices and components such as semiconductors, liquid crystal displays, and quartz devices. The Epson group takes at heart its management philosophy of maintaining its worldwide reputation as a reliable and respectable company. Presently, Seiko Epson Corporation has 56 overseas affiliates and three representative offices in 28 countries, and the number of employees of the entire group reaches 44,000.
