At Borg-Warner Automotive Powertrain Systems (PTS): QS-9000 certification has been achieved by PTS's Livonia, Michigan, plant. The facility is a leading manufacturer of highly engineered powdered metal products for automotive powertrain applications, including complex multi-level sintered brazed planetary carriers, sprockets, pinions, and large magnetic products for Borg-Warner Automotive four-wheel-drive transfer cases. At Borg-Warner Automotive Automatic Transmission Systems (ATS): QS-9000 certification has been achieved by the ATS operation in Coldwater, Michigan, which produces dampers, friction disks and piston plates. QS-9000 certification has also been achieved by ATS's Gallipolis, Ohio plant, which manufactures and/or distributes hot forged sintered products, including inner/outer races for one-way clutches. The ATS Advanced Technology Center, a research-and-development facility in Lombard, Illinois, received its ISO-9001 registration. In addition, the ATS operation in Ketsch, Germany, a manufacturer of brake plates, dampers, one-way clutches, torque converter piston plates and drums, achieved ISO-14001 and EWG 1836/93 certifications. Borg-Warner Automotive Air/Fluid Systems (A/FS) recently celebrated the completion of the QS-9000 certifications of all of its operations, which were achieved between July 1997 and May 1998 at A/FS locations in Dixon, Illinois; Water Valley, Mississippi; Sallisaw, Oklahoma; Tulle, France; and Blytheville, Arkansas. The group manufactures air management systems, automatic transmission solenoids, vapor management systems and oil pumps. "The attainment of these certifications means we have met or exceeded the stringent requirements of industry-sanctioned benchmarks for excellence," said John F. Fiedler, chairman and CEO, Borg-Warner Automotive. "These distinctions represent significant achievements for our employees, and provide strong evidence of the Borg-Warner Automotive commitment to product leadership." QS-9000 is short for "Quality System Requirements QS-9000," a worldwide common supplier standard for Chrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company, General Motors Corporation and some heavy-duty truck manufacturers. Based on the 1994 edition of the international quality standard, ISO-9001, QS-9000 encompasses these standards as well as additional requirements particular to the automotive industry. QS-9000 certification is a requirement for doing business with the North American automotive industry. The certification process involved an extensive audit of the company's overall operating systems by a third-party auditing firm. Retention of the certification requires successful completion of semi-annual audits by the auditor. ISO-14001 is the international standard for environmental management systems established by the International Standards Organization. EWG 1836/93 is a regulation passed by the Council of the European Communities to promote voluntary participation by industrial companies to evaluate and improve their industrial activities with respect to environmental performance and to provide such relevant information to the public. Chicago-based Borg-Warner Automotive, Inc. is a product leader in highly engineered components and systems primarily for automotive drivetrain applications. The company operates manufacturing and technical support facilities in 12 countries serving the North American, European and Asian automotive markets.
