Jaguar Selects HP Workstations and Servers for New-Car Development Programs; HP Systems Support Jaguar's Innovative, Virtual Prototyping Projects

PALO ALTO, Calif.--Nov. 30, 1998-- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced that luxury-car manufacturer, Jaguar, has purchased more than $8 million in UNIX(R) system workstations and servers from HP.
HP systems support Jaguar's C3P -- an innovative new computer aided design (CAD) software suite for next-generation car design. Utilizing virtual prototyping technology for better visualization of CAD geometry (predominantly solids), Jaguar can perform better predictive engineering and crash simulations before building physical prototypes and, as a result, realize significant cost reductions.
Jaguar says that its C3P program represents a major expansion of Jaguar's design and development program at its engineering center in Whitley, Coventry, England. The most recent HP systems procurement consists of 250 HP VISUALIZE Model C240 workstations. Jaguar has also adopted HP server technology to support its design program, for which it is using a K-Class server with EMC RAID for its CAE file server; and an S-Class and two V-Class servers for crash analysis.
"We are replacing our product design systems with a suite of tools called C3P based around SDRC I-Deas Master Series," said John Knight-Gregson, C3P deployment manager at Jaguar. "We needed faster, more powerful machines to meet the design needs of our new model program.
"HP managed to secure the last two procurements and now has some 50 percent of our business. The company came in with a very focused, customer-oriented approach. Customer focus is key to us."
"We have worked closely with Jaguar for over nine years now in the CAD arena and for the last 12 months in volume on the CAD side," said Gerald Sommariva, Jaguar account manager at HP. "While Jaguar has made significant investments in IT to support its car-design process, HP continues to develop CAE and CAD solutions that will help meet not only current but future new car-design requirements."
