UAW Announces Tentative Agreement with PeterbiltDETROIT, Nov. 23 -- UAW Vice President Jack Laskowski and UAW Region 8 Director Bobby Lee Thompson announced that a tentative agreement has been reached between Local 1832 and Peterbilt Trucks after extensive negotiations in the Nashville, Tennessee area. "This has been an extremely difficult set of negotiations," said Laskowski, director of the union's Heavy Trucks Department. "Yet, the Local 1832 membership has stood firm in backing its bargaining committee and the International in seeking an agreement that reflects their contributions in helping Peterbilt to reap bountiful financial success. This tentative agreement addresses the needs and concerns of our members and their families." "Our Peterbilt workers have successfully withstood adverse conditions over the past several months with their dignity sustained," said Thompson. "I salute them for their solidarity in their difficult fight to gain an equitable agreement." UAW Local 1832 members rejected Peterbilt proposals on May 3, 1998 and went on strike. They also rejected another company modified offer on July 5 and recessed the strike against Peterbilt on September 10 and made an unconditional offer to return to work while continuing to negotiate. Peterbilt management promptly locked out the 1,300 Local 1832 workers and they currently remain in that status. Specific details of the tentative agreement are being withheld pending an informational and ratification meeting that is set for the Gallatin, Tennessee Civic Center on Tuesday, November 24 at 10 a.m.
