Whitman Corporation Announces Quarterly Dividend 
    CHICAGO, Nov. 20 -- Whitman Corporation announced
today that its Board of Directors declared a quarterly dividend of five cents
per share on Whitman common stock.  The dividend is payable January 1, 1999,
to shareholders of record on December 11, 1998.
