Pond Assumes Role as New MEMA Chairman
RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--Nov. 18, 1998--Byron O. Pond Jr., chairman of the board of Arvin Industries Inc., Columbus, Ind., assumed office as chairman of the Motor & Equipment Manufacturers Association (MEMA) board of directors during Automotive Aftermarket Industry Week (AAIW), Nov. 3-6, 1998, in Las Vegas, Nev.Pond was elected by the MEMA directors at their meeting the weekend preceding AAIW. He and the other MEMA officers serve one-year terms ending November 1999.
Pond began his career in the automotive manufacturing industry at Maremont Corp. in 1963 as director of field sales planning. He rose to president of Maremont by 1979 and chairman by 1980. After Arvin Industries acquired Maremont in 1986, Pond was named executive vice president in 1990 and was elected to the board of directors. In 1993, he was elected president & CEO of Arvin, and was elected chairman & CEO in 1996.
In addition to his automotive industry activities through MEMA, Pond also serves as a trustee for the Automotive Warehouse Distributors Association (AWDA) University and as a member of the supplier advisory council to the Ford Motor Co.
Pond is a graduate of Wayne State University with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. In 1985, he received his alma mater's distinguished alumni award for corporate leadership. A native of Royal Oak, Mich., Pond is married and has four sons.

Ezzell was elected to replace MEMA's longtime treasurer John P. Gardell, who has served MEMA in this capacity for 16 years, until Gardell's company, Marvel Oil Co., was sold to Turtlewax earlier this year.

Continuing as directors until 2001 are Michael Cardone Jr., president & CEO, Cardone Industries Inc., Philadelphia, Pa.; Ronald L. Cutler, vice president, marketing-automotive, TRW Inc., Washington, Mich.; Gregory T. Davies, president & COO, Westinghouse Air Brakes Co., Wilmerding, Pa.; Thomas E. Evans, president, Tenneco Automotive, Deerfield, Ill.; and Scott C. Meyer, president & COO, Ken-Tool, Akron, Ohio.
Directors serving terms ending in 2000 are John C.
