Chrysler/UAW National Wellness Program Recipient of Unprecedented 23 Wellness Councils of America Gold AwardsST. PAUL, Minn., Nov. 16 -- The Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA) presented the Chrysler/UAW National Wellness Program with 23 Well Workplace Gold Awards on November 12, 1998. The WELCOA Gold Award, considered one of the most prestigious in the worksite health promotion industry, validated Chrysler's and the UAW's commitment to developing and implementing a comprehensive health promotion initiative that can serve as a model for other companies to integrate health promotion into the very fabric of their organization. The StayWell Company -- a pioneer of health risk assessments, focused risk-reduction interventions, managed health promotion and fitness programs for employers and health plans since 1978 -- is the health promotion management partner with Chrysler and the UAW. StayWell manages the Chrysler/UAW National Wellness Program at the 23 sites that achieved the WELCOA gold standard in workplace health promotion. Wellness processes, programs, and policies are practiced by management, union leadership and employees. (See attached List of Award Winning Sites) With a better understanding of the adverse economic impacts that poor health has on work-place productivity, more employers, such as Motorola and Quaker Oats, are investing in programs and processes that improve employee health behavior. Since 1991, WELCOA has been identifying companies meeting specific standards for comprehensive health promotion programs. Award achievements are defined at three levels: Bronze, Silver and Gold. Only 95 of the more than 300 company applications WELCOA has received to date have achieved the distinguished Gold Award. The Well Workplace standards are the defining characteristics of successful worksite programs and are the building blocks for exemplary health promotion program implementation. "At StayWell, we work with a variety of clients to provide health promotion programs, products and services. The two most critical elements of our partnership with an employer, however, are the commitment of resources and strong desire to make a difference. Chrysler's and the UAW's leadership and concern for the health and well-being of their employees made this outstanding achievement possible," said David Anderson, Vice President , Programs and Services, StayWell.
