Daniel Sherrick Appointed UAW General CounselDETROIT, Nov. 16 -- UAW President Stephen P. Yokich has announced the appointment of Daniel Sherrick to serve as General Counsel of the UAW. Sherrick replaces Jordan Rossen who retired. "I am confident," Yokich said, "that Dan Sherrick will provide the leadership necessary to maintain the UAW's proud tradition of effective legal advocacy on behalf of all workers, not just UAW members." "Since becoming an Associate General Counsel for the UAW in 1984," Yokich continued, "Dan Sherrick has compiled an impressive record of legal accomplishments on a broad range of precedent setting union and worker rights issues. He has demonstrated a combination of administrative ability, legal skill and the commitment to social and economic justice that will serve us well as we change for the future." In making the announcement of Sherrick's appointment, Yokich also paid tribute to retired General Counsel Jordan Rossen. "In his 34 years as an attorney for the UAW, and 14 years as our General Counsel, Jordan accomplished a great deal for our membership and other workers and in doing so has gained great respect for the UAW in the legal community." Sherrick is an honors graduate of both Yale University (B.A., 1980) and the University of Michigan Law School (J.D., 1984). Since his employment with the UAW, Sherrick has represented the UAW in proceedings involving a wide variety of issues, from corporate restructuring and employee benefits to employee ownership and more traditional labor law matters. Sherrick was the UAW's lead counsel in a dispute with Navistar regarding medical benefits for more than 60,000 retired employees and their families. That effort ended with retirees gaining lifetime protection of their health care benefits and ownership of 50 percent of Navistar stock. Sherrick has also represented the UAW in a number of cases before the United States Supreme Court and various federal courts of appeals. He has published several articles in law journals, been a guest lecturer at the Yale Law School and participated in symposia at the Harvard and University of Michigan Law Schools. A member of UAW Local 1981, Sherrick and his wife, Ellen Moss reside in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Other changes in the Legal Department are the appointment of Phil Gilliam as Associate General Counsel and Nancy Schiffer as Deputy General Counsel.
