Meritor Speaks About Improving Truck Safety with Improved Brake Systems; To Be Featured Topic at SAE Truck & Bus Expo in IndianapolisTROY, Mich., Nov. 12 -- Fatal accidents involving large trucks have decreased 35 percent during the past decade even though the miles traveled by these vehicles have increased 40 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). One contributor to this improvement may be bigger, better brakes, and especially new anti-lock braking systems (ABS) which are now mandated on all new trucks and buses. Leonard C. Buckman, president of Meritor WABCO, the world's leading supplier of heavy duty anti-lock braking systems, will address truck braking and ABS issues during the 30-minute Ray L. Buckendale lecture at the 1998 SAE Truck & Bus Meeting & Exposition, Wednesday, November 18, 1998, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Buckman will review braking systems from the turn of the century to current ABS technology and highlight future safety-improving technologies like electronic braking systems (EBS) and traction control. He will speak on the specific issues of reliability, responsiveness, federal requirements, potential benefits and driver feedback as related to ABS. Buckman's lecture, "Commercial Vehicle Braking -- Air Brakes, ABS & Beyond," is scheduled for noon in the Sagamore Ballroom. The news media are invited to remain for lunch in the Serpentine Lobby immediately after Mr. Buckman's remarks. He will be available for interviews.
