Autoliv Appoints New CEOSTOCKHOLM, Sweden, Nov. 12 -- The Board of Directors of Autoliv Inc. , a worldwide leader in automotive safety systems, has appointed Mr. Lars Westerberg new President and Chief Executive Officer. He will assume his positions spring next year. The current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Autoliv, Mr. Gunnar Bark, will remain Chairman of the Company's Board and work on a part time basis with strategic issues. Lars Westerberg is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of the Swedish-based aluminum and plastics company Granges AB, which has 40 percent of its sales to the automotive industry. Consolidated sales of the Granges Group amount to SEK 10 billion (approx. US $1.3 billion). The company has 6,500 employees. Before joining Granges, Lars Westerberg was President and Chief Executive Officer of the welding machine company Esab AB, where he also held several other top executive positions, including President of Esab's North American subsidiary (between 1984 and 1987). He started his professional career in 1972 at ASEA (today ABB). Lars Westerberg holds a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and an MBA from the University of Stockholm. He is 50 years of age. Autoliv Inc. develops and manufactures automotive safety systems for all major automotive manufacturers in the world. The company has 60 wholly owned subsidiaries and joint ventures with close to 20,000 employees in 27 vehicle- producing countries. In addition, the company has eight technical centers around the world, including 19 test tracks, more than any other automotive safety supplier. Sales in 1997 totaled US $3.3 billion and net income US $185 million. The company's shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange , its Swedish Depositary Receipts on the Stockholm Stock Exchange (SSE: ALIV) and its stock options on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE: ALV.)
