UAW Leaders Pay Tribute to Nation's Veterans
DETROIT, Nov. 10 -- In a tribute to the nation's armed
services veterans, UAW President Stephen P. Yokich and UAW Secretary-Treasurer
Ruben Burks, who directs the union's Veterans Department, urged union members
and their families to observe Veterans Day, "in praise, honor and remembrance
of the sacrifices and contributions made by our armed forces veterans to
promote and defend the cause of peace, freedom and justice."
"The men and women who have served this country, both here and elsewhere,
often under difficult and dangerous circumstances, deserve our praise and
gratitude," said Yokich.
"We should never forget, or take for granted, the sacrifices made by our
armed forces personnel who, often, have given their all in protecting the
American way of life," Burks added.
The UAW Veterans Department offers a variety of informational and support
services to union members who are veterans.
In many contracts, the UAW has gained the option for local unions to
display Prisoner of War-Missing in Action (POW-MIA) flags at company
facilities. Also, many UAW-represented workers will receive a Veteran's Day
holiday as a result of 1996 negotiations. All UAW International and Regional
offices will close on Friday, November 13 in observance of Veterans Day.
