The Timken Company Receives N.C. Governor's Award for Excellence in Waste ReductionCANTON, Ohio, Nov. 4 -- The Timken Company today was one of five businesses awarded North Carolina Gov. James B. Hunt's Award for Excellence in Waste Reduction. The award is presented annually to those businesses and government facilities that have shown an outstanding commitment to protecting the environment and public health through resource recovery, pollution prevention and source reduction, reuse and recycling. The environmental projects recognized for this award demonstrate the commitment of The Timken Company and its Lincolnton Bearing Plant, in Lincolnton, N.C., to pollution prevention and waste minimization. "Through our continuous improvement program, we have developed more efficient processes, improved quality and lowered costs while at the same time reducing waste and potential impacts to the environment," says Larry R. Brown, senior vice president and general counsel. "It is a great honor to be recognized by Governor Hunt for our recent achievements in waste minimization." Timken has ongoing waste minimization projects of recycling paper, cans, cardboard and steel in its plants and offices worldwide. The Lincolnton plant itself eliminated more than 32,500,000 pounds of such waste last year. By using returnable packaging throughout the company, including the Lincolnton plant, Timken saves about 1,300,000 pounds of cardboard and 1,000,000 pounds of wood per year. The Lincolnton Bearing Plant also initiated projects to decrease the amount of oil consumed in its processes and reuses oil where feasible. These projects reduced virgin oil usage by 23,000 gallons and eliminated 129,000 gallons of waste oil last year. Additionally, Lincolnton eliminated the use of toluene, a highly toxic and hazardous material, from its heat treating process, reduced its annual electricity usage by over 1,850,000 kilowatts and its annual water usage by 975,000 gallons. In total, these projects have an annual cost savings of more than $300,000. "One of The Timken Company's primary goals is to continuously improve its environmental performance," says Mr. Brown. "It has been our experience that minimizing waste and preventing pollution not only benefits the environment, but can also be good business." In 1997, Timken received the Ohio Governor's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Pollution Prevention and the New Hampshire Governor's Award for Pollution Prevention. The Timken Company (http://www.timken.com) is a leading international manufacturer of highly engineered bearings and alloy steels with operations in 25 countries.
