Volkswagen Reports October Sales - Up 68.5 Percent, Best in 13 Years

    AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Nov. 3 -- With sales of  16,811,
Volkswagen of America, Inc. reported its best October sales results since
1985.
    This figure represents a 68.5 percent increase over last year's October
figure of 9,976.
    It marks the best October for the German automaker in the U.S. since 1985.
    Volkswagen's Passat and Cabrio models enjoyed the best October ever with
sales of 3,346 and 1,072, respectively.  Volkswagen's popular New Beetle
continued its sales momentum in October with sales of 6,109, giving it a year-
to-date total of 42,146.
    For the year, Volkswagen also is far ahead of last year's pace.  Year-to-
date, Volkswagen has sold 187,384 new cars, up 61.7 percent over the same
period in 1997 when sales were 115,906.
    Volkswagen remains the top-selling European importer in the U.S.
