Endevco's Low-Cost Portable Vibration Sensor Operates Using 12-Volt Supply; Portability Opens Doors To New Applications in Automotive and Machine Monitoring

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif.--(AutomotiveWire)--Oct. 27, 1998-- Endevco Corp. Tuesday announced Model 50, a small, easy-to-mount Isotron(R) accelerometer offering a dynamic range of +\- 40 g and capable of operating from a 12-volt battery supply or wall transformer.
With its compact size, magnetic mounting options and its ability to operate from a standard car battery, this unique device is expected to open up new applications in automotive monitoring and machine conditioning as well as effectively address existing applications in these and other markets.
"Our customers drove the development of this product," said Anthony Chu, marketing manager, Endevco Corp. "It will enable users to measure vibration in applications that haven't been effectively addressed by competitive products and alternative technologies."
Model 50 measures .285-inch high x .5-inch diameter, is lightweight (3.8 gm), and is offered at one third the price of competitive alternatives. It includes an integral amplifier developed specifically for OEM applications and general purpose vibration measurements. The built-in microcircuit is configured to work in a constant current mode for use with supply voltage as low as +12 Vdc. The product offers voltage sensitivity of 50mV/g and an amplitude response of one to 5,000Hz (+\-1db).
Endevco's new accelerometer is available with an integral magnet (Model 50M1) for magnetic mounting. In this model, a magnet maintains intimate contact with a structure. This unique mounting option is simple and practical with none of the messiness of adhesives or the inconvenience of mounting and clean-up. In competitive products, magnetic mount is available as a screwed-on (as opposed to built-in) $100 option. With Model 50M1, the integral magnet is available at no additional cost. This option is ideal in machine monitoring applications where most machine housings are cast iron.
For user convenience, Model 50 comes with a three-meter pair of output wires attached, ready to be used right out of the box. A matching low-cost, 10-channel power supply (Model 4475) is also available. Other Endevco Isotron signal conditioners can also be used with this unit. In addition to a hermetically sealed design, the inside of the protective vinyl on the Model 50 can be filled with RTV to enhance resistance to moisture at the connection junctions.
The Model 50/50M1 is now available. In volume quantities, these devices will be priced below $100 each and sold in packages of 10.

    About Isotron Accelerometers

Isotron accelerometers are piezoelectric accelerometers with internal hybrid electronics. Isotron provides transducer design flexibility in addition to all the advantages of piezoelectric accelerometers. Electronic gain can be used to reduce transducer size or increase output sensitivity. Frequency response can be tailored with electronic filtering for specific applications, or to suppress seismic resonance of the accelerometer. All Isotron accelerometers are powered by a constant current source. They feature low impedance, single-ended output that can be fed directly into recording devices without the need for external charge amplifiers, as required with piezoelectric accelerometers. Isotron accelerometers are hermetically sealed to provide long-term reliability even in harsh environments.
