Motorola Enters Infrastructure Paging Agreement With Espectracom, Leading Paging Service Provider in Colombia

    FORT WORTH, Texas--Oct. 27, 1998--

Espectracom Expands Colombian Operations with Motorola Technology

Latin American consumers will be able to enjoy better paging services, including higher capacity and roaming capability throughout the United States and a large part of Central and South America, through an agreement Motorola announced today with Espectracom.
The contract calls for Motorola to provide the infrastructure for a nationwide expansion of Espectracom's paging services throughout Colombia.
Through the recent auction conducted by the Ministry of Communications, Espectracom gained valuable spectrum in the 900 Mhz band, allowing it to develop beyond its traditional position in the UHF band to offer higher quality, digital services in this new area of the spectrum.
Colombia's three principal cities, Bogota, Medellin and Cali, are the sites selected for the first phase of implementation of Motorola's FLEX-based satellite paging systems. Over the next two years, similar systems will be installed in other nine major cities.
"We chose Motorola for an advanced systems solution to help us maintain our paging leadership position in Colombia," said Hector Lucena, president of Espectracom.
"Upgrading our technology will allow us to provide our customers with unique advanced messaging features. We have recently entered into an agreement with the American company PageMart that will allow us to offer coverage in Canada, United States, Mexico, Guatemala, Panama, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Chile and Uruguay."
"We are pleased to offer Espectracom, one of the leaders in the Colombian market, Motorola's advanced FLEX(TM)-based paging protocol in such vital cities as Bogota, Cali and Medellin," said Rick Castaneda, vice president of Latin America Operations, Motorola Paging Systems Group.
"With Motorola's advanced paging infrastructure, Latin American customers will be able to continually upgrade their technology to offer the most advanced wireless communications features offered."
The FLEX(TM) Protocol, created by Motorola, is the global de facto standard for one-way high-speed paging. Adopted by operators in all of the top ten world's largest paging markets, Motorola's FLEX(TM) paging protocols include FLEX(TM) one-way, ReFLEX(TM) two-way and InFLEXion(TM) voice transmission technologies.
