NASCAR Adds Busch Date to 1999 Phoenix International Raceway Schedule

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.--Oct. 27, 1998-- International Speedway Corporation announced today the addition of a NASCAR Busch Series, Grand National Division race for the 1999 racing season at Phoenix International Raceway, a facility owned and operated by one of the Company's wholly owned subsidiaries, Phoenix Speedway Corporation. The announcement was made prior to the track's Dura Lube/Kmart 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series event held this past weekend.
The NASCAR Busch Series event is scheduled for November 6, 1999, the day before next season's Dura Lube/Kmart 500 event. The race replaces one of the two NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races at the facility. Additionally, Phoenix International Raceway will shift its traditional April NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event to the track's Indy Racing League (IRL) weekend to be held on Saturday, March 27 followed by the IRL event on the next day.
"We are very excited that Phoenix International Raceway will have the opportunity to showcase such a dynamic series as the NASCAR Busch Series," said Lee Combs, Senior Vice President of Operations for International Speedway Corporation. "The addition of the Busch Series, as well as the coupling of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck and IRL series at the track, are great long-term strategic moves for the Company. The announcements added to what was a very successful weekend of racing in Phoenix, including record attendance for all of the weekend's events as well as a sell-out crowd at Sunday's Dura Lube/Kmart 500 NASCAR Winston Cup event."
Separately, the Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex, which earlier this year was awarded a NASCAR Winston Cup Series date, will open the 1999 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series schedule. The race is scheduled for March 20, 1999 on the 1.5-mile speedway.
Additionally, Watkins Glen International, which formerly hosted its NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event on a stand-alone basis, will pair the truck event with its NASCAR Busch Series event on the weekend of June 25-26, 1999.
International Speedway Corporation is a leading promoter of motorsports activities in the United States, currently promoting more than 80 events annually. The Company owns and/or operates five premier motorsports facilities, including Daytona International Speedway in Florida (home of the Daytona 500), Talladega Superspeedway in Alabama, Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona, Darlington Raceway in South Carolina and Watkins Glen International in New York. Other track interests include the operation of Tucson (AZ) Raceway Park, a 45% stake in Miami-Dade Homestead Motorsports Complex, and an approximate 11% holding in Penske Motorsports, Inc. . The Company also owns and operates MRN Radio, the nation's largest independent sports radio network, and DAYTONA USA, the award-winning "Ultimate Motorsports Attraction" in Daytona Beach, FL.
