Kenwal Steel Corporation Achieves QS-9000

       Quality System Program as Highest Standard in the Steel Industry

    DETROIT, Oct. 22 -- Kenwal Steel Corporation has been awarded
the prestigious QS-9000 certification, a comprehensive quality systems program
designed by Chrysler, Ford, and General Motors that is definitive in the steel
industry.
    The announcement of the QS-9000 certification was made by Kenneth
Eisenberg, Chairman and CEO of Kenwal Steel Corp.
    "The QS-9000 represents the highest standard of excellence in quality of
steel products and services in our industry," said Eisenberg.  "It is an
achievement which rewards the joint efforts of all our employees and further
affirms our place as a world class provider of flat-rolled steel products and
services."
    The QS-9000 System, which was conceived jointly by Chrysler, Ford, and
General Motors to supersede their own respective quality systems, including
Chrysler's Supplier Quality Assurance Manual, Ford's Q-101 Quality System
Standard, and GM's Targets for Excellence, represents the definitive standard
of quality requirements for automotive steel suppliers, nationally and
internationally.
    Certification for the QS-9000 is an exhaustive process that involves all
facets of steel production and service.  In addition to fulfilling established
performance metrics within the auto industry, the QS-9000 Quality System
mandates that steel suppliers fulfill an expanded range of quality
requirements which emphasize continuous improvement of steel materials, defect
prevention, and reduction of variation and waste in the supply chain.
    "The QS-9000 certification is the most important to suppliers because it
requires continuous effort to maintain," said Rick Broxton, Kenwal Steel
Corp.'s QS-9000 Coordinator.
