TRW Executive Chairs 1998 National Cancer Ball
FAIRFAX, Va.--Oct. 21, 1998--TRW executive Bob Waters will serve as the corporate chair of the 1998 National Cancer Ball, a benefit sponsored by the National Capital Council American Cancer Society. The event is being held Friday, Oct. 30, at the International Trade Center located in the Ronald Reagan Building, Washington, D.C.
Waters is vice president for human resources in the Fairfax, Va.- based TRW Systems & Information Technology Group. An advocate for cancer-related issues for many years, Waters currently chairs the District's American Cancer Society's Crusader Executive Committee, a group dedicated to raising money to support cancer research.
"Having experienced its terrible impact on my family, friends, and employees, finding ways to eliminate cancer from our society has been one of my passions for the past seven years," said Waters. "The fact that one-half of all men and a third of all women in America will develop cancer during their lifetime is alarming. This continues to make me concerned for the well-being of my family, employees, friends, and others, who could possibly lose a family member to this terrible disease."
Added Waters, "I am encouraged by our involvement in breast cancer imaging technology through TRW's Center for Medical Image Analysis. In the future, this new technology will play a significant role in helping save lives through early detection."
TRW is a major sponsor of this year's Ball. The contribution of $20,000 from the TRW Systems & Information Technology Group doubled the company's donations to cancer-related organizations in the metro area since 1995. The Group, led by Phil Odeen, executive vice president and general manager, has approximately 5,000 of its 18,000 employee workforce based in the D.C. metro area.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to join the American Cancer Society in its mission to eliminate cancer as a major health problem," said Robin Thurman, manager of community relations. "The risk of developing cancer can be reduced through research, education, and service," she added.
TRW is working with several companies and research institutions to more reliably detect breast cancer in its earliest stages. In clinical trials with thermal medical imaging technology, TRW is providing engineering and advanced imaging analysis for a new, painless method of breast imaging that does not require radiation or tissue compression.
TRW Healthcare Solutions, located in Fairfax, is rapidly expanding the company's advanced technological expertise to solving critical healthcare information problems. With the ability to link complex databases and large, disparate computer systems in a secure environment, TRW provides advanced solutions to healthcare data management problems across the nation.
TRW Inc.provides advanced technology products and services for the automotive, space and defense, and information technology markets worldwide. The company's sales in 1997 were approximately $12 billion (including the BDM acquisition). The company's news releases are available through TRW's corporate web site (http://www.trw.com/).
