Auto Club Begins Survey of Southern California Gas Prices
Business Editors LOS ANGELES--Oct. 21, 1998--The average price of regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in Southern California is $1.183, according to the first Automobile Club of Southern California Fuel Gauge Report. This compares to a state average of $1.195 and a national average of $1.066. The Auto Club gas price survey will be issued monthly and will provide an average price for the 13 southern counties of California as well as an average for selected cities. Future news releases will provide comparisons to the previous month and the prior year as the data is developed. "Since driving is a key part of most Southern Californians' lifestyles, knowing the price of a gallon of gas helps consumers plan their budget and provides information to compare with the prices that they are paying," said Jeffrey Spring, spokesman for the Auto Club. "We've had hundreds of requests for Southern California-specific gas price information and we're pleased to now provide it regularly." The Auto Club surveyed gas prices during the 1970s and 80s during the state's gas shortages, added Spring. When prices and supplies stabilized, the surveys were discontinued. Although there currently is an abundance of fuel supply, the demand for gasoline prices as a consumer service has steadily increased.
