USAA Announces Leadership Transition

NORFOLK, Va.--Oct. 20, 1998--USAA announced today that Ben Hacker, senior vice president and general manager of its Mid-Atlantic Region headquartered here, will be turning over leadership of the office to J.J. "Jack" Dantone.
The regional office oversees the insurance needs of its members in the states of Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
Hacker decided a reassignment was necessary because of health concerns. After Jan. 1, 1999, he will continue to serve and perform duties with emphasis on community relations at both the local and national level, as one of three USAA CEO appointees to the USAA Volunteer Executive Program.
"The move to Norfolk was a prelude to plans for eventual retirement in this area, and the timing and circumstance are now appropriate to begin to implement that plan," said Hacker.
Hacker, who retired from the U.S. Navy with the rank of rear admiral and 30 years of service, has been in his Mid-Atlantic Region position since March 1997. He joined USAA in 1988 and has also served as the senior vice president and general manager for USAA's regional office in Sacramento, Calif., and later as the chief administrative officer at the corporate level in San Antonio.
Dantone joined USAA in May this year as vice president, special assistant to the president, USAA Property & Casualty Insurance Group, and became deputy regional senior vice president, Mid-Atlantic Region in August.
Before joining USAA, Dantone had a distinguished 34-year Naval career. He flew combat missions in Southeast Asia as a U.S. Navy fighter pilot and was a member of the Fleet Introduction F-14 Tomcat Cadre. His commands included Fighter Squadron Fourteen, USS Wichita, USS Abraham Lincoln precommissioning crew, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, Carrier Group 3, the Defense Mapping Agency and the National Imagery and Mapping Agency. He retired with the rank of rear admiral.
