Autoliv Opens Plant in BrazilSTOCKHOLM, Oct. 15 -- Autoliv Inc. , a world-wide leader in automotive safety systems, has opened a manufacturing facility for seat belts and airbags in Brazil, the eighth largest automobile producing country in the world. Construction work began a year ago, in order to begin commercial shipments before the end of this year. The production plant is located in Taubate, 150 km north of Sao Paulo, the principal vehicle-producing area in the country. This initial expansion phase, which represents almost a US $10 million in capital expenditures, encompasses a 6,700 square meter building with production lines for seat belts and airbag systems. Pre-construction studies are also underway for a steering wheel plant in Brazil. Autoliv do Brasil was established in 1996 as a sales and marketing company in Sao Paulo, at which time Ford in Brazil already was a Autoliv customer. Since then, the Autoliv group has also been awarded contracts by Audi, Volkswagen and Mercedes-Benz, together with future projects for General Motors. Autoliv has already a plant in Argentina, which together with the plant in Brazil will supply the entire Mercosur Free Trade Market area (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay). Autoliv Inc. develops and manufactures automotive safety systems for all major automotive manufacturers in the world. The company has 60 wholly owned subsidiaries and joint ventures with close to 20,000 employees in 27 vehicle-producing countries. In addition, the company has eight technical centers around the world, including 19 test tracks, more than any other automotive safety supplier. Sales in 1997 totaled US $3.3 billion and net income US $185 million. The company's shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, its Swedish Depositary Receipts on the Stockholm Stock Exchange and its stock options on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE: ALV.)
