Enigma Introduces `Xtend' for Knowledge Management; Intelligent Customization and Repurposing of Reference Publications Enables Users to Effectively Manage Knowledge
WALTHAM, Mass.--Oct. 8, 1998--Enigma, Inc., the leader in electronic publishing solutions, introduces Xtend for knowledge management. Xtend will be ready for commercial shipments in October 1998.
Xtend is the first distributed publishing solution that allows the intelligent customization and repurposing of reference publications. Xtend further builds upon Enigma's strategy of providing the leading end-to-end electronic publishing solution, enabling end-users to seamlessly add their own data and modifications to publications.
With Xtend, end-user organizations can capitalize on the publisher's production investment by not only reusing content, but also by customizing the publication to their specifications. It combines data sources from the publisher and the end-user into a single application while maintaining the original GUI, query screens, hyperlinks and navigation workflow.
A knowledge management solution targeted at solving customer support and supply chain problems for manufacturers and large service companies, Xtend is ideally suited for use in the aerospace, financial, telecommunication, utility and legal industries. By automatically creating hyperlinks between new content and existing content, Xtend builds integrated tables of content, flags edited content, automates revision control, and supports multiple views.
Xtend effectively bridges the knowledge gap between organizations that publish and consume large amounts of reference information. By building from the publisher's knowledge that is embedded in customized topic-specific search screens, hyperlinks, tables of content and an end-user interface, the end-user organization can create its own knowledge repository that is based on the publisher's best practices and its own procedures and internal data.
Organizations that provide large volumes of technical documentation on CD-ROM, LANs or "delivered Intranets" can now transfer their knowledge of data navigation and usage to their customers in an open and flexible application. Organizations that receive reference content from vendors can integrate their own policies, procedures and technical data to vendor-provided publications with minimal republishing costs.
"With Xtend, Enigma makes a fundamental advance in electronic publishing technology," noted Nathaniel Palmer, senior consultant at Delphi Group. "By delivering the ability to dynamically re-purpose manufacturer's information, Xtend allows end-users to derive significantly more value from published content."
"Xtend builds on Enigma's strategy of providing intelligent access and use of information from document repositories across organizations," noted Randy Clark, vice president of marketing at Enigma. "It also builds on our strategy of using standard document exchange formats such as RTF, SGML and XML to make our application content reusable and customizable from the desktop."
