Buick Named Official Sponsor of World Golf Championships
    PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga., Oct. 4 -- Buick Motor Division announced
today that it has signed an agreement to become an official sponsor of the
domestic events of the World Golf Championships, from 1999-2002.
    The World Golf Championships will consist of three tournaments:  Andersen
Consulting Match Play; the NEC Invitational; and the American Express
Championship.  A fourth event, the World Cup Team Championship, will be added
in 2000.  The four tournaments, each with a different format, will be open
only to the world's top golfers.  The events will rotate between venues in the
United States, Europe, Japan, Australia and Southern Africa.
    The World Golf Championships are the first events to be jointly sanctioned
by the International Federation of PGA Tours -- The PGA Tour, PGA European
Tour, Southern Africa PGA Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia and the PGA Tour of
Japan.
    "We are very pleased to announce our sponsorship of the World Golf
Championships," said Robert E. Coletta, General Manager of Buick Motor
Division.  "After 40 years of involvement with the PGA Tour, this is an
excellent opportunity for us to take our golf sponsorship to another level and
extend our relationship with the PGA Tour to a world stage."
    Buick will be the exclusive provider of automobiles to the following World
Golf Championship events held in the United States:  Andersen Consulting Match
Play (1999, 2000, 2002); The NEC Invitational (1999-2002); the American
Express Championship (2001); and the World Cup Team Championship (2000).
    Now in its 40th year as the PGA Tour's original corporate sponsor, Buick
is title-sponsor of four PGA Tour events:  The Buick Invitational (La Jolla,
Cal.); the Buick Classic (Harrison, New York); the Buick Open (Grand Blanc,
MI); and the Buick Challenge (Pine Mountain, Ga).
    The Official Car of the PGA Tour since 1984, Buick sponsors PGA Tour
professionals Steve Elkington, Ben Crenshaw, Chip Beck and David Berganio Jr.
Actress Cheryl Ladd serves as Buick's golf ambassador and represents Buick at
golf tournaments, golf exhibitions and golf events nationwide.
    Buick also is sponsor of the "PGA Tour Shot of the week," ESPN's weekly
"Inside the PGA Tour" program and is the exclusive domestic auto sponsor of
USA Network's coverage of the PGA Tour.  Through its four tournaments, which
are all televised nationally, Buick has donated more than $13.6 million to
local charities since 1982.
