Company Recognized for Use of New Technologies Timken Earns Hi-Tech Industry Praise
    CANTON, Ohio, Sept. 28 -- The Timken Company has
been selected as one of Information Week magazine's most innovative companies.
The magazine's ranking of the leading corporate users of information
technology rates Timken 251st among the 500 companies recognized in the tenth
annual survey.
    "We always have been a technology-driven company," said Thomas W.
Strouble, senior vice president - technology.  "Our customers and shareholders
are the beneficiaries of our constant efforts to employ the latest tools to
find more efficient ways to strengthen our position as a worldwide leader in
manufacturing."
    Information Week recognized companies for their use of information
technology to open new markets.  Timken was evaluated on a variety of
technology and business criteria, including desk-top computing and application
development tools, the Internet and electronic business networking and data
access, knowledge management and data mining, the use of enterprise
applications and the effectiveness of the company's business processes.
    The majority of the companies ranked in the listing reported that
technologies like the Internet had contributed to their bottom line.  Among

access to a wealth of information in areas like application data, engineering
tools, product information, financial performance, corporate news and
statistics and employment opportunities.
    "Leveraging the Internet already has proven to be an effective tactic, and
our use of cutting edge technologies is helping us find new ways to meet the
demands of the global marketplace," said Strouble.
    In the June 17, 1998 issue of PC Week magazine, Timken ranked 186th in the
"Fast-Track 500" -- a listing of the companies that, in the opinion of the
editors, are leading the pack in terms of "turning the promise of Internet
technologies into reality."
