Dana Corporation to Provide Land Rover's New Luxury Sport Utility with Space-Saving Axle

    FT. WAYNE, Ind., Sept. 28 -- Rover/BMW's new redesigned
luxury sport utility vehicle, the 2001 Range Rover, will have more room in its
underbody due to an innovative front pan axle to be supplied by Dana
Corporation's Spicer Axle Division.
    The BMW engineered and developed vehicle, code-named L30, will use Dana's
independent front "oil pan" axle.  In this axle, the final drive unit bolts
directly to the engine oil pan.  The wheel driveshafts correspondingly run
directly through the oil sump, mating the final drive unit to the wheelends.
    "BMW came to Dana with an interesting challenge," said Wayne Myers,
president of Dana's Automotive Axle Products Group.  "The initial vehicle
concept group required the engine, packaging, and performance features of a
luxury BMW passenger car without sacrificing the 4X4 capability and ground
clearance characteristics which have made Land Rover famous.  Dana met the
challenge with this pan axle design, which addresses the specific needs of the
entire platform."
    The Spicer Axle Divison will source the front pan axle from Dana's
worldwide global manufacturing base.  The final assembly location has not yet
been determined.  Approximately 30,000 axles a year are expected to be
produced for the 2001 Range Rover.
    The Spicer Axle Division, along with the Spicer Driveshaft and Parish
Structural Products Divisions and the Modules & Systems Group, comprises Dana
Corporation's Automotive Components Group.  Spicer Axle manufactures axles and
axle components, including front- and rear-driving and non-driving axles,
transaxle auxiliary drive units, wheelends, and its technologically innovative
Hydra-Lok(TM) differential.  It is headquartered in Fort Wayne, along with
