Autoliv Strengthens Position in Thailand
    STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 23 -- Autoliv Inc.
, a worldwide leader in automotive safety systems, has
increased its shareholding in its joint venture Autoliv Thailand Ltd. to a
majority by 85% by acquiring 35% of the shares from the other partner.  The
local partner, Thai Rung Union Car Co., Ltd. (a publicly traded vehicle
assembler and component supplier to the Thai auto industry), keeps the
remaining 15%.
    Autoliv Thailand was established in 1995.
    Autoliv Thailand currently produces seat belts for Thai Rung Union Car and
Volvo.  The company has orders for steering wheels, airbags and seat belt
pretensioners beginning in 2000, and a further project for airbags and seat
belts beginning in 2001.  Seat Frame assembly will commence in 1999.
    The Thai light vehicle production is expected to gradually recover from
this year's drop from 350,000 vehicles to 200,000.  The most significant
manufacturers are Toyota, Isuzu, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes,
Hyundai, Ford, Volvo, GM and BMW.

    Autoliv Inc. develops and manufactures automotive safety systems for all
major automotive manufacturers in the world.  The company has 60 wholly owned
subsidiaries and joint ventures with close to 20,000 employees in
27 vehicle-producing countries.  In addition, the company has eight technical
centers around the world, including 19 test tracks, more than any other
automotive safety supplier.  Sales in 1997 totaled US$3.3 billion and net
income US$185 million.  The company's shares are listed on the New York Stock
Exchange , its Swedish Depositary Receipts on the Stockholm Stock
Exchange (Stockholm: ALIV) and its stock options on the Chicago Board Options
Exchange (CBOE: ALV).
