U.S. Steel Breaks Ground for New Michigan Automotive CenterTROY, Mich., Sept. 22 -- U.S. Steel's Automotive Group held groundbreaking ceremonies here today for a new 43,300-square-foot automotive center in Troy, Michigan. The two-story building will house U.S. Steel's Detroit-area sales, customer technical service and product application support staffs. The building also will include a 14,000-square-foot steel applications research facility. U.S. Steel President Paul J. Wilhelm and Mayor Jeanne M. Stine of Troy participated in the ceremonies which were attended by numerous public and corporate officials. Site of the building is 5850 New King Court, near the I-75/Crooks Road Interchange. "It is essential that we have a significant hands-on presence here in the automobile capital of the world," said Wilhelm. "And this new automotive center will enable us to more effectively address the needs of our automotive customers worldwide. "This new center will help U.S. Steel build on the strengths of our current automotive team. The focus of our Detroit research efforts will be on advancing technology for sheet steel applications for the automotive industry and maintaining steel as the material of choice. Our mission will be to improve the quality and performance of our products and to help our automotive customers reduce their costs." Supporting the center's future research activities will be facilities for evaluating steel properties, simulative forming tests to evaluate sheet steel performance in a variety of manufacturing conditions, an 1,100-ton hydraulic stamping press for full-scale stamping research, component testing for structural performance and Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) facilities to support design and computer simulation capabilities. U.S. Steel plans to add 10 technicians and engineers to support the new facility. These additions will increase the company's total Troy staff to approximately 110. "These skilled people, combined with our new state-of-the-art research capabilities, will complement the cross-functional team of professionals we already have assembled here to serve the auto industry," said J. James Kutka, general manager-automotive for U.S. Steel. "These new facilities are expected to benefit many employees throughout U.S. Steel, as well as our customers," added Kutka. "We'll have a training center in the building where I anticipate we will often have our employees working shoulder-to-shoulder with our customers."
