Standard Products Announces Expected Q1 Earnings

Standard Products Expects Reduced Fiscal First Quarter EarningsDEARBORN, Michigan, Sept. 21 -- The Standard Products Co. , a leading supplier to the worldwide automotive original equipment industry, said it expects the combined effect of the recently ended labor strike at General Motors and the current economic weakness in Brazil will reduce earnings for its seasonally soft first quarter ended September 30, 1998, to the break-even level or slightly above. The Company reported diluted earnings per share of $0.16 for the first quarter last year. The Company estimates that the GM strike will reduce diluted earnings for the quarter by $0.06 per share. GM accounts for about 13 percent of the Company's sales worldwide. The Company said that to the extent that production lost during the GM strike is made up over the rest of the year, it can recoup the losses caused by the strike. In Brazil, continuing economic deterioration has resulted in production cutbacks by local automotive manufacturers. These cutbacks have weakened demand for the Company's products, which will cause lower first quarter results from its Brazilian subsidiary than had been anticipated. Brazil accounts for about seven percent of the Company's worldwide sales. Certain statements in this press release constitute "forward-looking statements" as that term is defined under the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995. The achievement of the projections and estimates set forth is subject to certain general risks and uncertainties, including economic and industry conditions that affect all international businesses as well as specific risks, including but not limited to a prolonged recession in Brazil, and the various factors contained in the reports filed by the Company with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Standard Products produces highly engineered polymer-based products and systems on a global basis for the automotive, appliance and construction industries.
