Exide Clash with Florida Attorney Genera
21 September 1998
Exide Responds to Florida Attorney General MotionBLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Sept. 21 -- Exide Corporation received a motion filed by the Attorney General of the State of Florida on Friday, September 18th. That motion, allegedly based on documents and information that the Attorney General claims to have obtained from sources other than Exide, states that the Company's response to a subpoena issued March 16th, 1998, is incomplete and erroneous. While Exide is unaware of the documents and information alluded to in the motion and has no access thereto, it considers its response to the subpoena complete and denies that any information supplied the Attorney General is intentionally false and misleading. The Company notes that in certain instances the motion incorrectly and improperly characterizes some of the voluminous material supplied by the Company in response to this subpoena. This motion, first learned of by Exide from the media, potentially has a greater impact on the Company's share price than the fair and timely resolution of the Attorney General's inquiry. Despite this disappointing development, Exide remains committed to work with the Attorney General in the proper legal framework to conclude this matter at the earliest possible date. Exide Corporation, with over $2.2 billion in sales, is the world's leading manufacturer of lead-acid batteries. Headquartered in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, with administrative offices in Reading, Pennsylvania, Exide also has significant interest in related technologies.
