Johnson Controls Selected by IndustryWeek Magazine as a Best Managed CompanyMILWAUKEE, Sept. 16 -- Johnson Controls, Inc. has been named to the third annual list of IndustryWeek magazine's 100 Best-Managed Companies. The selection marks the third consecutive year the company has been included in the list. Candidates for IndustryWeek's 100 Best-Managed Companies were chosen by IW editors from the IndustryWeek 1000, a list of the world's largest publicly held manufacturing companies released in June. Two companies of the Dun & Bradstreet Corp. -- Dun & Bradstreet and Moody's Investors Service -- supplied the data for the IW 1000. The 100 Best-Managed Companies were selected after a four-step process: analysis of the company's financial performance; review of a questionnaire mailed to each IW 1000 company; research into each company's practices in areas such as philanthropy and safety; and voting by a panel of more than 80 business leaders, analysts academicians from around the world. "IndustryWeek's 100 Best-Managed Companies demonstrate superior, consistent management performance, in good times and bad," said John Brandt, editor-in-chief of IW. "These awards also recognize companies that are positioning themselves for the future by investing heavily in such areas as change, market development, people and society." Twenty-one companies appear on the list for the first time; 15 companies appear for the second time; and 64 companies, including Johnson Controls, have made the list each year. Twelve countries are represented on the list: the United States (72 companies), the United Kingdom (7), Japan (6), Germany (3), Canada (2), Finland (2), Mexico (2), Sweden (1), Switzerland (1), Denmark (1) and Taiwan (1). IndustryWeek's 100 Best-Managed Companies will be recognized at the 100 Best-Managed Companies Awards Celebration and Executive Summit, February 1-3, 1999, at the Turnberry Isle Resort & Club in Aventura, Fla.
