Dana Corporation Participates in NAFTA Public Meeting

    OTTAWA, Ontario, Sept. 15 -- Dana Corporation , a
leading global supplier of vehicular components, participated Monday in a
public meeting held by the Canadian National Administrative Office (NAO).  The
NAO was established under the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation
(NAALC), a side-agreement to NAFTA, to ensure consultation and cooperation at
a federal level among NAFTA members on labor legislation matters.
    The meeting concerned a petition submitted to the NAO by the Canadian
Office of the United Steelworkers of America and over 40 concerned
organizations from three NAFTA countries.  The petitioners requested a review
by the Canadian NAO of the enforcement of Mexican labor legislation.  The
allegations relate to occupational safety and health issues and conduct
surrounding a union election at an Echlin plant in Mexico.  Dana Corporation
acquired Echlin in July of 1998, after the Canadian NAO process was initiated.
    In the short time since the acquisition, Dana has conducted a thorough
review of the petition's allegations, through an internal task force and
external independent consultants.  The review uncovered many facts that
contradict the allegations, particularly as these relate to health and safety
considerations.
    The NAO proceedings ensure that the parties to NAFTA respect and enforce
their respective labor laws.  Dana is participating in the public meetings and
related processes to provide the results of its internal and independent
investigations and to provide any assistance required to the process.  Further
meetings on the petition are anticipated in the near future and Dana expects
to present further information to assist the Canadian NAO.
