Consolidated Freightways Orders New Trucks for 1998

MENLO PARK, Calif.--Sept. 14, 1998--Consolidated Freightways (CF) has ordered 561 new trucks for delivery before the end of 1998. All but 20 of the tractors are being supplied by CF's longtime truck manufacturer, Freightliner Corporation of Portland, Oregon.
CF is adding Freightliner's Century Class No. 10 and No. 20 series tractors to its long-haul fleet. Medium duty (No. 176/276 series), medium/heavy (No. 180 series) tractors and straight trucks (No. 154/194 series) are being placed in city and shorter haul service.
The company is also receiving 20 Mack trucks to be tested in its linehaul and city operations. The total tractor acquisition is part of a $45 million investment in new and refurbished equipment in 1998.
"This equipment brings the new CF closer to our goal of having the premier fleet in the LTL industry," said W. Roger Curry, president and chief executive officer. "Our CF team members deserve state-of-the-art equipment to work with. And we are all proud to place such a fine fleet in the service of our valued customers."
Earlier this year CF asked a cross section of driver representatives from throughout the company to consult on the features and accessories which would best serve driver needs. As a result of this input all tractors will be equipped with chassis and cab AirRide suspension as well as Knoedler No. 9800 series driver's seats. All units will also include daytime running lights, tinted glass, electric starters, dual front fender mirrors and tilt-telescoping steering wheels, among many other new features.
Freightliner Corporation was begun as a subsidiary of Consolidated Freightways in 1939. It was acquired from CF by Daimler-Benz in 1981. Consolidated Freightways is a transportation company primarily providing less-than-truckload and logistics services throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico using its system of 350 terminals and 22,000 employees. The company also provides international freight services between the U.S. and more than 70 countries.
