Autoliv Strengthens Position in South AfricaSTOCKHOLM, Sweden, Sept. 11, -- Autoliv Inc. , a worldwide leader in automotive safety systems, has made its joint venture Autoflug S.A. in South Africa a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Group by acquiring the remaining 51 percent of the shares from the other partner Automotive Manufacturing Investment Ltd. (AMI). Some related assets of Dimetal S.A., a component supplier to Autoflug, was also acquired from AMI. The acquired operations have slightly more than 200 employees and currently US $8 million in sales to external customers. Autoflug currently produces seat belts and related parts. The most important customers are BMW, Toyota, Ford, Nissan, Fiat and Mazda. The light vehicle production in South Africa amounted to more than 300,000 vehicles in 1997. Autoliv entered the South African market in 1991 by acquiring Autoflug in Germany, which held a 26 percent interest in Autoflug in South Africa. The holding was increased in 1997 to 49 percent. Following the additional increase in ownership announced today, the name of the company will be changed to Autoliv South Africa S.A. Autoliv Inc. develops and manufactures automotive safety systems for all major automotive manufacturers in the world. The company has 60 wholly-owned subsidiaries and joint ventures with close to 20,000 employees in 27 vehicle-producing countries. In addition, the company has eight technical centers around the world, including 19 test tracks, more than any other automotive safety supplier. Sales in 1997 totaled US $3.3 billion and net income US $185 million. The company's shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange , its Swedish Depositary Receipts on the Stockholm Stock Exchange (SSE: ALIV) and its stock options on the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE: ALV.)
