Norfolk Assembly Plant Puts Virginia at the Vanguard of Environmental StandardsNORFOLK, Va., Sept. 10 -- Ford Motor Company's Norfolk Assembly Plant has achieved ISO 14001 certification which means that the plant meets the International Standard for Environmental Management Systems. To recognize this prestigious accomplishment, a new banner will hang in the main plant entranceway and an ISO 14001 flag will fly on the flagpole. Norfolk Assembly is the only facility of its size with ISO certification in Virginia. Norfolk Plant Manager Thomas Phillips calls the achievement a reward for hard work by the entire plant. "Receiving ISO 14001 certification is the culmination of dedicated effort, preparation and audits," he said. "Implementing the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System at the Norfolk Assembly Plant will improve the environment by targeting specific objectives for reducing the use of energy, packaging and other waste." The ISO 14001 standard requires the Norfolk plant to use a strict environmental management system and to monitor and continually improve its performance. The standard encompasses all of the environmental aspects of a manufacturing site, including energy use, water treatment, waste disposal, noise and air quality. This system also applies to how the vehicle is manufactured, including body construction, paint, and assembly. The Norfolk Assembly Plant joins 67 other Ford plants with ISO 14001 status. Ford has committed to achieving ISO 14001 certification for all of its 140 manufacturing facilities worldwide by the end of this year. The Norfolk Assembly Plant manufactures the F 150 pickup truck, the best-selling vehicle in America. Opened in 1925, the plant employs 2400 people.
