Mack Wins $29 Million Postal Service Order
LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa.--Sept. 2, 1998--Mack Trucks Inc. has been awarded a competitive U.S. Postal Service contract worth approximately $29 million for 416 vehicles, with delivery expected to begin in the first quarter of 1999."We're very pleased that a customer like the Postal Service, which demands the best in quality, service and performance, has chosen to continue and expand its long-term relationship with Mack," said Paul L. Vikner, Mack executive vice president for sales and marketing.
The order includes 44 Mack(R) MR model vehicles, which will be built at the company's Macungie Assembly Operations in Macungie, Pa.; and 372 Mack(R) CH model vehicles, which will be built at the Winnsboro Assembly Operations in Winnsboro, S.C. All of the vehicles will feature Mack(R) E-TECH(TM) electronic engines built at the company's Hagerstown, Md., Powertrain Operations.
The Mack engines will be rated at 300 horsepower, and feature the new Mack V-MAC(R) III electronic vehicle management and control system for optimum fuel economy.
In addition to the V-MAC III system, all the vehicles include a variety of leading-edge trucking technology features, including Rockwell-Wabco anti-lock braking systems, Allison HD4060 automatic transmissions, Eaton front and rear axles, and Xanta onboard computer systems.
The heavy-duty tractors will be delivered to Postal Service facilities nationwide, and used for over-the-road transportation of mail throughout the country. The current contract follows a 1996 Postal Service order for 932 Mack vehicles, and a 1992 purchase of 345 vehicles.
