Meritor Introduces Series of Independent Front SuspensionsHANNOVER, Germany, Sept. 1 -- Meritor Automotive, Inc. has announced the availability of a new line of independent front suspensions (IFS) systems for the bus, coach and motor home markets. The IFS systems will be developed in conjunction with Streparava S.p.A. The announcement was made at a special press conference at the IAA Hannover Truck Show. "Meritor independent front suspension systems are ideal for customers who desire improved ride and handling over a conventional I-beam design," said Glen Swanson, product manager for Meritor's Bus and Coach business. "Our IFS systems can be tailored to fit the unique aspects of each vehicle, including sub-frame modules and steering linkage design." Meritor will offer six IFS models ranging from 7,000 pounds (3.2 t) to 18,000 pounds (8.2 t) gross axle weight rating (GAWR). Each is available with a variety of brake options including cam, air disc and hydraulic disc designs. The IFS systems also utilize industry-standard hubs, drums and rotors. Other features of Meritor IFS systems include: * Lower unsprung weight for improved steering and handling responsiveness; maintains tire contact with road for safer cornering and braking; * Ball-type articulation joints for reduced weight of suspension module as compared to some competitive designs; * Lower roll center and 56 degree turn angle for improved maneuverability around corners; * Dynamic articulation characteristics can be tailored to provide a more refined "feel" to the driver under tight turning or hard braking conditions; * Suspension geometry designed to reduce vehicle movement during braking and maintain constant caster angle for improved control during braking; and * ABS-ready option available. Meritor IFS systems are customized designs which can be tailored to the various performance and packaging requirements of OEM customers.
