Amtech Receives Maintenance Contract for Toll Collection System

1 September 1998

Amtech, Division of Intermec, Receives Maintenance Contract for World's Largest Electronic Toll Collection System
New York's MTA Awards Organization $23.8 Million
Contract to Maintain E-ZPass Toll System

DALLAS, Aug. 31 -_ The Amtech Systems Division of Intermec
Technologies Corporation, a UNOVA, Inc. company, announced today
that it has received a $23.8 million maintenance contract from New York's
Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority, an agency of the Metropolitan
Transportation Authority _ Bridges and Tunnels (MTA).
MTA operates the largest and busiest electronic toll collection (ETC)
system in the world. The four-year contract calls for Amtech to provide
service and maintenance for the ETC system on MTA's E-ZPass toll system, which
currently has more than 1.4 million customers and processes more than 450,000
transactions each day.
Amtech was the systems integrator when the E-ZPass system was installed in
1994 and has had an ongoing maintenance contract since then. Under the new
contract, Amtech will provide expanded maintenance services for the ETC
software, lane controllers, and peripherals for the E-ZPass system, which has
grown to 10 toll plazas and 205 ETC lanes.
"We are delighted to continue our four-year relationship with MTA," said
Winston V. Guillory, Jr., senior vice president, sales, marketing, and field
operations, Amtech Systems Division. "E-ZPass commuters count on the
convenience of ETC lanes, and we appreciate MTA's confidence in our ability to
provide prompt, high-quality maintenance services for the expanded E-ZPass
system."
As part of the contract, MTA will have 24-hour access to the Amtech
Response Center (ARC), which was established in 1991 to provide centralized
worldwide ETC support services. MTA's toll-operations personnel can contact
the Dallas-based ARC 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The ARC records the
service request and immediately dispatches a field service technician to
perform preventive, corrective, or emergency maintenance on the E-ZPass
system. ARC personnel can also perform remote online diagnosis and repair
without disrupting operations staff or motorists traveling through the ETC
lanes. In addition, Amtech's on-site maintenance team can be notified of any
potential problems through the automated maintenance alert and paging features
that are installed in each toll plaza computer.
"This is a significant win for Amtech," said Neal C. Hult, director, field
operations, Amtech Systems Division. "Maintenance is the fastest-growing
sector in the global ETC industry, increasing an estimated 24 percent each
year*. As a leader in the worldwide ETC market, we have seen maintenance
become a key component of Amtech's business strategy."
In addition to MTA's E-ZPass system, Amtech provides maintenance for
several other major ETC systems, including the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority's
PIKEPASS(R) system, the Florida Department of Transportation's SunPass(TM)
system, the Harris County (Houston, Texas) Toll Road Authority's system, and
the North Texas Tollway Authority's TollTag(R) system.
