UAW Sets Strike Deadline at Lear Corporation
CLEVELAND, Aug. 26 -- Negotiations are proceeding for a first
contract with the Lear Corporation , Lordstown Seat Assembly Plant.
UAW members, in a strike vote taken on Sunday, August 23, 1998, voted nearly
unanimously in favor of a strike in the event a contract could not be reached
by midnight, Thursday, August 27.
UAW Local 1112 has an Amalgamated Charter. While the Lear Corporation is
a separate corporation from General Motors Corporation , the workers
at Lear Corporation are members of UAW Amalgamated Local 1112. Warren Davis,
Director of UAW Region 2, based in Cleveland, Ohio said, "While negotiations
have seemed to be progressing well, most of the economic issues are as yet
open, which includes all wages and fringe benefits." Davis said, "The Union
will continue to work hard to reach an agreement before the deadline."
