26 August 1998

Home Run for Bristol Motor Speedway's Goody's 500 and Food City 250
CONCORD, N.C., Aug. 25 -- Speedway Motorsports, Inc.
today announced that Bristol Motor Speedway hit a home run this
past weekend at the Food City 250 NASCAR Busch Series and Goody's Headache
Powder 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series events, with the Food City 250 recording
the largest attendance in the history of the Busch Series and the Goody's
Headache Powder 500 recording the third consecutive sell-out since SMI
purchased the facility in 1996.
"More than 250,000 fans turned out for one of the most exciting stops on
the NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series circuits," stated Bruton Smith,
Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Speedway Motorsports. "Our continued
efforts here have resulted in the largest attendance ever for a Busch Series
race. The Goody's 500 sold-out again and even with seating capacity of
133,000, a seat here continues to be one of the toughest tickets in sports to
purchase."
"This racing week is the pinnacle fan experience," continued Smith.
"Beginning with the regionwide RaceFest celebration, moving to Thursday, which
began with the transporters of the Busch teams and 35 Winston Cup teams
parading downtown from Food City RaceFest Night to the speedway, while being
showered with fireworks." Green and blue lights surrounding the speedway
greeted 20,000 campers as they entered the facility from recently completed
road improvements. New parking areas and a vastly improved road system
accommodated the additional vehicles transporting record crowds to the
speedway.
"The record results achieved at Bristol demonstrate the effectiveness of
our business strategy," stated Smith. "To further capitalize on our
opportunities at this facility, additions to the 1999 schedule include drag
racing, featuring the NHRA Winston Showdown all-star event, weekly NHRA
bracket racing program, Super Chevy Show, and special jet and rocket car
shows." In 1999, Bristol will again host the First American Pole Day, Moore's
Snacks 250 NASCAR Busch Series race and Food City 500 NASCAR Winston Cup
Series race the weekend of April 9 - 11, and the Food City 250 NASCAR. Busch
Series race and Goody's Headache Power 500 NASCAR Winston Cup Series race the
weekend of August 27 - 28.
