SDRC Plays Key Role in Defining Specifications for PDM Industry
CINCINNATI--Aug. 25, 1998--Structural Dynamics Research Corporation , the PDM market leader, today announced that it is one of six companies to play a key role in developing PDM Enablers, an industry specification which was adopted in July 1998 by the Object Management Group. OMG is an industry consortium of over 800 software vendors, developers and end users that works to provide a common architectural framework for object-oriented software including product data management (PDM) software.SDRC worked with five companies to develop the specification: Digital Equipment Corporation, Fujitsu Limited, IBM, Matrix One, Inc., and Sherpa Corporation. The specification will enable PDM software developers to refine and create PDM software that will more easily integrate to existing legacy systems, enabling businesses to reduce implementation time and more quickly realize the business benefits of PDM.
"The PDM Enabler specification has already proven to be a robust foundation for the development of PDM solutions. As more companies push to decrease cycle time and streamline production through development and use of PDM solutions, a consistent set of specifications is essential," said Dr. Jon Siegel, Director, Domain Technology, Object Management Group.
This consistency among PDM solutions is most critical for implementing systems that deliver enterprise-wide functionality, such as SDRC's Metaphase(R) Enterprise(TM) system. Global manufacturers operate in a "virtual enterprise" of geographically and culturally dispersed divisions and supplier networks, each of which may have one or several PDM systems. With the new PDM Enablers standard in place, any information system that meets the industry specification can share all product definition data design, drawing, or document - with any other PDM software located within the virtual enterprise.
"Our global customer base demands interoperability among diverse CAD/CAM/CAE and PDM technologies," said Bob Nierman, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of SDRC. "We are committed to a leadership role in developing PDM industry specifications, because our PDM solutions must accommodate the diversity that mergers, acquisitions and reorganization bring to industry-leading manufacturers."
The Object Management Group was established in 1989 and is based in Framingham, Mass. The OMG industry consortium develops object-based solutions, including the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA)/IIOP specification that allows interoperability over the internet. Companies from all industries that develop and use object-based software may join the OMG.
SDRC is a leading international supplier of integrated Mechanical Design Automation and testing software, Product Data Management software, and related services. The Company's products and services help manufacturers optimize product concepts early in the design process, enabling them to significantly improve product quality while reducing product development time and cost. SDRC employs more than 2,200 people and has 64 offices in 16 countries throughout North America, Europe, and the Asia/Pacific region. SDRC's market-leading PDM solution, Metaphase, is developed, marketed and supported by the Metaphase Technology Division of SDRC.
